WHO AM I AND WHY I CREATED LITERACY DECODED

As a special education teacher, I taught children with a variety of profiles (LD, Dyslexic, ADHD, ODD, ASD, MID).

 

Each student was unique, thus I explored and implemented many different curriculums to meet all their needs. Some students made more progress than others, but none made as much progress as I hoped for.

 

After 5 years of working with the same students, I knew that I could do better. I saw their potential but was unable to access it. I tried my absolute best, but with a lack of effective and ongoing professional development, I was ill-equipped to make the impact I so desperately wanted.

The following year, I was recruited to become the Principal of Kayla's Children Centre - a school, therapy clinic, and recreational centre for children with disabilities. At the same time, my son Zevi (child #4) was showing signs of Dyslexia and was having a very difficult time learning to read. His teachers were concerned and asked me for advice. As an experienced special education teacher and principal, you'd think I'd have the answers..

I continued to consult with many educational professionals (literacy specialists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Developmental Pediatricians).

 

Finally, I came across a Speech Pathologist that introduced me to the Orton Gillingham approach. My son started speech therapy, using the Orton Gillingham method to build phonological awareness, grapheme and phoneme skills, etc.

 

I was so excited about this method that seemed to be the best-kept secret that I decided to become OG certified myself.

I started training the teachers at Kayla's Children Centre and it was a huge success. Students that were learning to read and write for years with little progress started making REAL progress. I continued to work with my son who went from being a nonreader to a fluent reader in a little over a year.

​

This is when I discovered my mission/vision in life - Help all teachers and parents unlock the science of reading because I know that ALL CHILDREN can learn to read and write with the right method of instruction.
